A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen people got wounded in a seemingly premeditated gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence near the city of Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and one more individual who ran away after the blast was found soon after. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The explosion could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the area showed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed Italian media, noting that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
